ICONS are a dance group of 5 dynamic African and Caribbean women. We perform routines which highlight each of our unique cultures including Cape Verde, San Tome, Jamaica and Guyana . We all have a diverse dance backgrounds and bring each element of our culture to our routines. In every performance, we include moves, themes and song choices curated to empower women. Women empowerment is the focus of our team . We believe all women should stand in their power and be strongly represented in community and art spaces. We also want to highlight the vast culture of the diaspora and increase the visibility of African and Caribbean culture in a positive light.
Our Team was formed in 2018, 5 strangers who connected at Urban Arts formed a sisterhood through our love of lifting up other women. Since our formation we have been blessed to share our art in several space in the community including Manifesto, AfroWave, Afro Carib fest , Aga Khan Museum , Arts in the Park , RISE, Miss Face of Humanity Pageant, Strive Toronto and University of Toronto . We have been blessed to work with talented creative women such a Miss Coco Murray of Coco Collective and Sanaaj Mirrie of Afiwi Groove who offered mentorship and guidance. As well as talented men like Eman Asare who have offered unique perspective and guidance. Our goal is to continue sharing our energy and culture with the community and encourage others to see the power of movement.
