This is an in-person event!
This will be a 45-minute contemporary circus and dance show featuring Abebe Atlabachew, an Ethiopian traditional and contemporary Circus artist, and 4 traditional Ethiopian dancers from Ethiopian dance company: Sebseb Belu. Artists will be sharing theatrical stories, interlaced with traditional styles of circus and dance, both full of bright-colour and culture. These 5 Ethiopian artists, will tell the often-unknown stories of migration and the journey of seeking refuge. They will share their own collective stories, and the stories of others with similar live-experiences. Ethiopian circus styles, often paired with dance and culture, will be shared as an opportunity bring this celebration of the beauty, warmth and richness of Ethiopian culture through dance and circus to Toronto. Circus disciplines of acrobatic-dance, Free standing Ladder, V-shape Bounce Juggling and Cigar Box Juggling will be explored in unique way, interlaced with the high energy and colour of traditional dance, traditional-clothing and traditional-circus representing the part of home that is often missed, despite the reasons for having to leave. These traditional circus disciplines are prominent in the Ethiopian circus community, making this community performance an opportunity to bring something new to Toronto’s contemporary circus world, and share these stories and culture with Toronto’s Danforth community.
