Fly By Night

July 6 @ 7:00 pm - 11:00 pm

Fly by Night, presented by the experimental media arts organization Pleasure Dome, is an outdoor audio-visual experience delving into the rhythms and waves of immigrant narratives that sustain and thrive in North York. Staged in Lee Lifeson Arts Park, a Willowdale green space named in honour of Rush’s co-founders — both of whom were born and raised in the community — the screening will showcase experimental works by filmmakers representing the multitude of stories from North York’s diverse publics. By centering Korean, Chinese, and Persian filmmakers within an outdoor public space that is frequently used by community members and residents from those cultures, Fly by Night will re-contextualize the ways in which our senses can guide us collectively into a shared emotional reflection on what it means to be from both here and also there. Inspired by the park’s amphitheatre and permanent outdoor sound-sculptures, Fly by Night will feature an interactive moving sound performance at dusk followed by an hour-long screening at night featuring Weiging Wang, Leslie Supnet, Alejandra Higuera, Kimura Byol, among other Canadian artists. In continuing Pleasure Dome’s mandate to showcase experimental artworks, Fly by Night will navigate the ways in which telling non-traditional narratives from diverse vantage points helps us to start new chapters, find what we’re after, and change everyday.

Pleasure Dome

Pleasure Dome is an artist-run programming collective and publisher dedicated to experimental moving images since 1989. Pleasure Dome screens innovative works in engaging and “expanded” presentations, including installation and other unconventional exhibition formats and venues. We present a variety of different genres and styles that re-imagine the modernist experimental tradition. Pleasure Dome aims to nurture an appreciation within the community at large for art expressed in the media of moving images of all formats, with or without sound; to educate the community at large in the history of artists’ moving images; and to make available through public exhibition, local, national and international artists’ moving images that are rarely if ever seen by the general public. Pleasure Dome partners with media art organizations and artist-run centres in Toronto, nationally, and abroad to initiate co-presentations, collaborations, and sponsorships to bring forward culturally diverse and experimental media projects. Pleasure Dome is generously supported by the Toronto Arts Council, the Ontario Arts Council, and the Canada Council for the Arts, and by our members, sponsors, and community partners.
