August 26 @ 12:00 pm - 3:00 pm

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every day that begins at 12:00 pm, repeating until Fri August 26th 2022

SIA will produce a two-part Weston Folktale Festival in Raymore Park and Memorial Park – York in Toronto’s Weston community in August 2021. This two-week event will be a celebration of our community’s cultural diversity through the telling and exploration of culturally-relevant folktales and stories from participants ancestors. For part one, we will work alongside the local Parks Friend Group Scarlettwoods Warriors for Change to collect local stories and culturally-relevant folktales and create a community-engaged installation in Raymore Park. The installation will include local photographs taken by youth from the Scarlettwoods community. In part two, and in tandem with part one, we will produce a two-week version of local playwright M.J. Kang’s HARABOGEE AND ME in Weston’s Memorial Park bandshell. Directed by Brenda Kamino, this fun and family-friendly one hour play follows Helen, a young Korean-Canadian child as she listens to her Harabogee (grandfather) recount Korean folktales. At first impatient, Helen becomes more captivated as the stories continue; and the play allows each of these folktales to be performed by the cast of five performers. Through the course of the story, Helen’s Harabogee seeks to instill his young granddaughter with a greater connection to where she comes from.
