Mayworks Festival of Working People and the Arts presents works at Dentonia Park over the month of May including a photography installation, a day of interactive activities and an afternoon of music and poetry reading.
The Chorus, by Jessica Kirk, is a photography installation presented at Dentonia park from May 6 – 31. Layering historic archives of Afro-Caribbean migrant care workers with contemporary expressions, the piece imagines futures rooted in honour and connective care. The installation is part of In Transit, curated by Mitra Fakrashrafi and presented at the Mayworks Festival of Working People and the Arts. Incorporating the work of three artists, the exhibition responds to existing and deepening divides in Toronto, especially as shaped by transportation infrastructures with long histories of connecting and fracturing communities.
At Dentonia Park on May 21, In Transit artists participate in a day of activities including: 12pm: How can we live? An artist talk and community dialogue with Jessica Kirk and Jade Nixon 2:00pm: Revolutionary Optimism and the Migrancies of Gig Economy Organizing, a workshop with Sarom Rho in partnership with Gig Workers United 12:00 – 4:00pm: SHABDHAN (“careful”) An interactive Installation by L. Akhter.
On May 28, Mayworks celebrates its closing event with musical performances by Lacey Hill and Aysanbee, as well as poetry readings by Maysam Khreibeh, Danny Torres.
