This is an online event!

Labyrinth Ontario is creating a series of videos in Toronto parks featuring local artists who play modal music traditions. The videos offer portraits of some of the traditions being played in and around Toronto today, with music and instruments from Egypt, Iran, Afghanistan, India, and Poland. Along with performance footage, the musicians discuss the music they play – its construction, its history, and its place in larger musical geographies – and their own paths as artists.

The artists presented represented several generations of GTA artists, from recent arrivals to longstanding parts of the Toronto music community: Marta Solek, Pankaj Mishra with Tanjeer Alam, George and Suzanne Sawa, Ustad Atiq Nikzad with Pedram Khavarzamini, and Soudabeh Badiei.

Videos will be shot on site in late July and released on the following dates:

Thursday Aug 26 – Pankaj Mishra (sarangi) and Tanjeer Alam (tabla)
Monday Aug 30 – Marta Solek (suka and Plotz fiddle), Saskia Tompkins
(nyckelharpa, viola), and Lea Kirstein (cello and violin)
Thursday Sep 2 – George Sawa (qanun) and Suzanne Meyers Sawa (percussion)
Monday Sep 6 – Soudabeh Badiei (gheychak) and Sanaz Nakhjavani (qanun)
Thursday Sep 9 – Ustad Atiq Nikzad (rabab) and Pedram Khavarzamini (tombak)
