Ol’ Time Carnival: Mama, ‘dis is Mas!
July 20 @ 3:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Cajuca Mas Arts Producers will present Ol’ Time Carnival: Mama, ‘dis is Mas!, A lively presentation of traditional Carnival characters, folklore, dance and drumming – set to historic narration, calypso and music in Bob Hunter Park (Scarborough). With over 50+ costumed performers, interacting with the audience, we tell the story of Carnival from Emancipation , presenting traditional characters as well as more modern characters which are part of Carnival today. Our project entails researching the characters we intend to present, as well as writing a new script and story for the event. We will, as a collective, create the costumes based on folklore, choreograph the dance and coordinate the drumming and calypso songs which fit in with the theme.
We engage a number of skilled artists who, like us, are passionate about maintaining the origins of Carnival art and culture. These include: Swizzlestick Theatre, Joel ‘Connector’ Davis (reigning Calypso Monarch), King Cosmos (Calypsonian), Club Carib of Oshawa Dance Theatre, multiple ‘celebrity’ performers like Kara and Shawn of the Karabana Blog Spot, De CocoPanyol (Blogger), Mr. Meggy (soca artist), and many more. In total, we have about 54 performers for each event, in costume or playing music. For 2019, we will engage the Hummingbird Drummers and a local DJ team to provide music and sound.
