On the Brink is a community-engaged artistic residency on the shore of Lake Ontario, leading to a workshop (July 8, 2017)  two evening performances (September 15 & 16, 2017). On the Brink fuses dance with sound and light at the water’s edge. Community workshops engage creatively with the site through land and water-inspired movement, improvisation with found sounds, and textile design. In partnership with Great Lake Commons we investigate microorganisms and micro plastics found in the lake’s water.

On the Brink speaks to the powerful role of the lake — as a place of encounter between cultures, as a border and barrier, and as a natural body which resists human containment and contamination. Composer and artistic director Juliet Palmer joins in collaboration with choreographer Aria Evans, percussionist Germaine Liu and designers Sonja Rainey and Kai Masaoka to gently probe the historical, political, social and ecological layers of the lake. On the water, under the water, in the water: listening to the lake, what do we hear, what do we see?
