What “gifts” do gardens give us? With PLANT GIFTS, Community Arts Guild draws on several years of experience collaborating with Scarborough Village Community Garden on their annual Harvest Festival. PLANT GIFTS will include artwork, activities and performances we previously created together, while exploring new themes of abundance and symbiosis, and building a unique, welcoming, artistically exciting event on the doorstep of many East Scarborough residents and community agencies. This summer, our artwork and parade will celebrate abundance and symbiosis: the gifts and relationships that allow people and plants to thrive in a reciprocal way, as the garden grows and people participate in community life.

We’ve progressed from learning about the plants and how to nurture them, to understanding how the plants nurture us; We will imagine the plants’ perspective on people, and how we might bring the garden to life within the parade. We’ll make two large puppets using a community design process, devote time to learning how to animate the puppets, and work on performance aspects of the parade. Alongside the big puppets, we’ll offer other making activities to create smaller items, which can be taken home and/or brought back to the garden for the parade.
