Shakespeare in the Ruff  is thrilled to present “Portia’s Julius Caesar” , a radical adaptation of Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, created by Artistic Director Kaitlyn Riordan. This adaptation reframes Shakespeare’s political thriller by putting the female voices centre-stage. It uncovers the political agency of women in Julius Caesar, while exploring themes of female friendship, fertility and the silencing of women. The play will be directed by Associate Artistic Director Eva Barrie in our home of Withrow Park.

Portia’s Julius Caesar flips the perspective of the story, reaching into the shadows of this great play, to shine light on the fact that women were not only present for historical moments from which they’ve been excluded, but often had direct impact on them too. They, along with oppressed minorities (often slaves in Ancient Rome), were more often than not more heavily impacted by political change than the men making the decisions. Ruff is committed to creating space for under-represented voices in the classical canon, and the play uses a classic tale to explore how women are effected by the decisions of men in power.
