The Mask Dance In The Park

August 12 @ 2:00 pm - 6:00 pm

The Mask Dance in the Park project is an event that celebrates the Traditional Korean Talchum Dance, also known as Korean Mask Dance, where participants will engage in activities that will help them discover this part of the rich Korean heritage, led by artists and performers from the Korean Dance Studies Society of Canada (KDSSC) and a guest company from Korea, the Jinmi Park Dance Company.
The KDSSC will offer a day of workshops and performances at Parma Park on August 12th, 2023, where attendants will learn about this type of dance and enjoy the opportunity of painting their own traditional Korean mask, learning the base movements required for this dance, trying out the instruments used for the music played during the piece, and being part of the performance that will take place at the end of the day. The performance will be an adaptation of the traditional Talchum’s plot, which criticizes the aristocrats’ exploitation of the people an exposes injustice in society through satire and comedy. The adaptation will be written and choreographed by the guest artists from Jinmi Park Dance Company, led by Artistic Director Mi Young Kim, and performed by the core artists of the KDSSC and Jinmi Park, which will invite people that attended previous workshops to be part of the play at one point.
