There is No Word for Wilderness (TNWW) is a land-based theatrical nature walk brought to life with mask, puppetry and live music. The story follows a young woman as she ventures into the wilderness where she meets several animal travel companions who help guide her through the forest. While lost, she finds what she’s been missing most. Suitable for all ages and free to attend, There is No Word for Wilderness is an immersive and timely story that asks us to reconsider our relationship to the environment through humor, play and a little bit of magic.

TNWW aims to reconnect urban audiences to land and water through an immersive and community-based theatre experience. Now is a crucial time for the collective development of environmental care and protection, and it begins with strong human relationships to the natural world. Reconnection, we believe, is a matter of urgency.

At the end of the play audiences gather around a campfire for an Anishinaabe teaching and Sacred Fire Ceremony led by Anishinaabe Kwe Shelba Deer from Sheguindah First Nation. Shelba gives a teaching about the land and an offering to Shkagamik-Kwe (Mother Earth). During the community gathering we offer light traditional foods such as organic berries as part of the ceremony. The performance run time is approximately one hour beginning at 6:00PM, followed by a half hour (7:00PM-7:30PM) fireside teaching by Shelba Deer and food offering. Audiences are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes and warm clothing for trail walking in September.
