Unfolding’ is a large-scale community-engaged theatre production co-created over the last three years by professional artists and East Scarborough residents. The project draws on local history research to build an immersive, site-specific theatre performance in Cedar Ridge Park, our home base in the neighbourhood for many years. It incorporates playwriting, theatre, music, dance, puppetry, and visual performance (e.g. projections, shadow play and installation). Co-created by professional artists and East Scarborough residents, ‘Unfolding’ draws on local history research to build immersive, site specific performance. Activities in Fred Johnson park will include textile dyeing and printing, sculpting and making with natural materials, dance, puppetry and theatre-making activities.
Workshops will happen once a week for six weeks in July and August, and the project will culminate in performances and participatory art making at the Scarborough Village Community Garden’s harvest festival in September The project seeks out stories and knowledge that may be less visible or widely known. The title of Unfolding refers partly to this action, working to see the neighbourhood in context, including First Nations history and tradition, stories of migration and diverse cultural narratives that residents and artists carry with them to this place. Because the subject is broad, we’re choosing content based on interests and offerings of the groups and individuals who join in, and desires of our team of artists; acknowledging that what we create will only be part of the picture.
