Ward’s Island Fire Parade

Hand-crafted lanterns, stilt-walkers, puppets, fire artistry and a spectacular finale create a magical evening celebration of light and dark. The event is open to all ages and is a combination of outdoor performance, stilt and flag choreography, illuminated images, fire artistry, shadow puppetry and fire sculpture. The majority of the route is accessible but ends on a sandy beach, viewable from nearby boardwalk or pathway. Friday August 2 starting at 8.45pm. Audiences should get the 7.45 or 8.30pm boat from the ferry docks at Queens Quay and Bay Street, to Ward’s Island. Walk straight ahead to the Ward’s Island Association clubhouse.
The event is free, with pass the hat for donations. The Toronto Island café and Rectory Cafe are open for evening meals, drinks and snacks. Bring your own lantern to the parade Lantern workshops with locally-harvested willow and tissue paper take place at the Wards Island clubhouse on Sundays July 21 and 28, 2 to 5pm, and July 30, August 1 at 7pm to 9pm. There is a $25 materials fee per lantern. Allow two sessions to complete a lantern. Participants and volunteers are welcome. An open, drop-in workshop is open from 10am to 8pm July 29 to August 2 at the WIA clubhouse. Be in the performance, assist with puppet and costume making, help marshal the parade. Children must be accompanied.
