“Woven” is a series of park animations that celebrate Toronto’s rich textile history, along its York Beltline – an old rail line turned green space that connects several of Toronto’s uptown communities.
Located in Walter Saunders Park, one of our city’s hidden gems, the site-specific project seeks to enrich community relations through a modern take on traditional fibre art, while interweaving various interactive arts practices, such as interpretive dance, drumming workshops, and live painting. Collectively these works create a tapestry of art, movement, and sound that encourages community dialogue and provides access to arts and culture within public space outside the downtown core.
“Woven” leverages STEPS’ extensive experience producing collaborative public artwork along the York Beltline, and engages both historic and new communities of the Beltline through a multidisciplinary program series hosted in Walter Saunders Park, drawing inspiration from the community’s history and current desires for increased arts and culture programming. The series will result in cross-cultural and cross-generational engagement, fostering community pride and unlikely relationships.
