The KDSSC is dedicated to our founder’s vision to preserve and spread awareness of the rich Korean heritage, while achieving artistic excellence and commitment to creativity influenced by Canadian culture in line with the times. Mi Young Kim Folk DanceInstitute was established in 1979 by Artistic Director Mi Young Kim. As the institute grew, it became the Korean Dance Studies Society Canada in 1987. For 42 years, we are a charitable organization dedicated to educating and training people of all background, age and skill level about Korean heritage through dance and music. Within the KDSSC, there are two notable groups:

Mi Young Kim Dance Company Award-winning professional dance group that harmonize the traditional and the contemporary. Performances held annually domestically and/or internationally.

The Soo Ryu School of Dance and Drum Recreational and professional training of Korean traditional dance and drum, preparing students in a career in research, performance and teaching.

Part of Canadian Heritage’s program for National Arts Training. The crown jewel of the KDSSC is the SooRyu Dance Festival, which became a bi-annual event since 2003. Past special guests were: Jung Ae Noh (Vancouver), Jeffrey Chan (Ontario), William Lau (Ontario), Kozakura Sensui (Ontario) and Zab Maboungou (Montreal).
