Hopewell Garden Audio Story

June 20 @ 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm

Event Series Event Series (See All)

What does a garden look like? What does a park look like? What’s the story of a garden? Come along as Described Toronto seeks out the answers in a new audio storytelling project.

Described Toronto is working with the Hopewell Community Garden to paint an audible portrait of one garden in one park in North York. Through interviews with community gardeners, audio description of the park and garden, a live presentation with native plant expert Lorraine Johnson, and an in-person guided walk, Described Toronto invites you in – from wherever you are in the world. Two events in the garden as well as audio clips released online throughout the summer will welcome attendees, both in-person and virtual, to experience the fascinating world of native plants and be inspired by the hope that is cultivated when natural habitats are restored.

Here’s how you can participate in our project:

IN-PERSON

Thursday, June 20 @ 6:30pm
Attend a live presentation in and around the Hopewell Community Pollinator Garden, with live audio description embedded in the talk.

Saturday, September 21 @ 2pm
Attend a guided walk in the park and garden, with live audio description and touch tour. This guided walk is intended for the Blind and partially sighted community but anyone is welcome to join.

VIRTUAL

July 2024 onwards
Follow our journey online by listening to sneak peeks of our audio story through the summer. For those not able to join us in person, our complete audio story will be available in the fall. Follow our Facebook page for updates.

Accessibility:
Both in-person events will include ASL interpretation, vocal amplification, and embedded audio description. The sidewalk leading to the garden is wheelchair accessible. There are a few benches available nearby for seating but attendees are advised to bring a portable chair or blanket if they require seating for the in-person events. The guided walk will include additional audio description and a limited number of sighted guides. Attendees who wish to have a sighted guide available are asked to contact us in advance by emailing Christine: christine.malec@gmail.com.
